Why a business thread inside Messages behaves unlike any other channel

Why a business thread inside Messages behaves unlike any other channel

It is not a chat widget wearing different colours. The conversation is attached to a person's own Messages app, sits alongside their family and their dentist, and never disappears when a browser tab closes — which changes what a business is allowed to put in it.

The business gets verified before anyone can message it

A brand goes through Apple's registration and review, and only then does its name, logo and colour appear in the thread. That is why the header here says preview: no registration means no verified identity, and pretending otherwise is the one thing this channel does not allow.

The customer always opens the conversation

There is no cold outreach and no marketing broadcast. A thread starts from a button on a site, a search result or a scanned code, and the person can delete it whenever they like — so the whole value is in being genuinely useful the moment they arrive.

It is a thread, not a session

Nothing resets. The same conversation is still there next month with everything that was said in it, which is why an assistant on this channel has to be able to pick up a job by reference and recognise a signed-in customer rather than starting the introductions again.

The preview on the home page

A preview: the Apple Messages thread is drawn in this site's own CSS. No business is registered with Apple and nothing here reaches the Messages app.

The device drawn there is this site's own CSS — a header, a composer and a screen — and the screen is a SLOT. When you tap one of the quick replies, the live assistant opens inside it and answers you there. Nothing in that frame is a scripted conversation: there is no pre-written customer turn and no canned reply, because a transcript nobody generated would be the page telling you something about the product that is not true.

What changes on the day the channel goes live

One field. This site serves a small configuration file with a single businessId value, null today. Set it once the business is registered and approved with Apple; the CTA becomes a genuine Business Chat link. The page reads it at runtime, so the same build switches from an honest preview to a working Apple Messages for Business link with nothing rebuilt and nothing rewritten.
