Independent opticians

The frame is measured to your face, and the conversation never starts again from scratch

Three rooms, two dispensing opticians and a workshop upstairs where the adjustments happen while you wait rather than in a fortnight.

Haldane Optical Preview — no registered account

A preview: the Apple Messages thread is drawn in this site's own CSS. No business is registered with Apple and nothing here reaches the Messages app.

Apple Messages for Business

Why a business thread inside Messages behaves unlike any other channel

It is not a chat widget wearing different colours. The conversation is attached to a person's own Messages app, sits alongside their family and their dentist, and never disappears when a browser tab closes — which changes what a business is allowed to put in it.

The business gets verified before anyone can message it

A brand goes through Apple's registration and review, and only then does its name, logo and colour appear in the thread. That is why the header here says preview: no registration means no verified identity, and pretending otherwise is the one thing this channel does not allow.

The customer always opens the conversation

There is no cold outreach and no marketing broadcast. A thread starts from a button on a site, a search result or a scanned code, and the person can delete it whenever they like — so the whole value is in being genuinely useful the moment they arrive.

It is a thread, not a session

Nothing resets. The same conversation is still there next month with everything that was said in it, which is why an assistant on this channel has to be able to pick up a job by reference and recognise a signed-in customer rather than starting the introductions again.

Three things worth asking

Each one opens the assistant with the question already sent — you only wait for the reply.

Can you put new lenses in a frame I already own, and what would thin lenses cost?

Answered from the published workshop list and lens tiers through list_services and list_plans.

The hinge on my tortoiseshell frame has snapped — can the bench fix it?

Opens the enquiry form as a card in the chat, already carrying what you described.

What the bench does

Everything the workshop upstairs will take on

Six kinds of work, each with what it covers, who can ask for it and how long the bench needs. The assistant answers from this list rather than promising something the workshop cannot do.

Frame repair

Soldered hinges, re-threaded rimless mounts, replacement arms machined to match — including frames nobody has made since the eighties.

OR-REPAnyone, bought here or not

Most repairs same day; anything needing a part, four to seven days

Reglazing your own frame

New lenses cut to a frame you already own and love, once the bench has checked it will survive the edging.

OR-GLAZEAnyone

Three to five working days

Adjustment and refit

Ten minutes at the bench to put a frame back where it belongs on your face. No charge, no appointment, whoever made them.

OR-ADJAnyone, no charge

While you wait, any opening hour

Complex prescription

High powers, large prism, lenticulars and anything over a certain index — hand-edged rather than sent to a lab that will decline it.

OR-COMPReferred or direct

Seven to ten working days

Prescription sunglasses

Tints, polarised and photochromic in your own prescription, with the sports and wrap frames that need a base-curve compensation.

OR-SUNAll lens tiers

Five working days; wraps, seven

Contact lens supply

Repeat supply against a current specification, posted or collected, with the bench flagging when the fitting needs revisiting.

OR-CONTExisting wearers

Posted within two working days

The desk

Threads open on the bench

Conversations as the bench sees them, with their id and state. Look one up with its id and the email it belongs to, or sign in and see your own.

OR-7714open

Thin lenses into a 1960s frame inherited from a grandmother, bench checking the rims first

Frame survived the test edge — acetate is dry but sound. Warmed, cut and trial-fitted; one arm needs a new core before it goes out.

OR-7690completed

Everyday pair sitting low on one side after a dropped bag

Re-set at the bench in about ten minutes on 5 September. No charge, as always.

OR-7721pending

Snapped hinge on a tortoiseshell frame bought elsewhere, brought in loose in a bag

Waiting on a photograph of the break before the bench says whether it solders or needs a machined replacement arm.

Signed in as the demo customer, the assistant reads these back through my_conversations. Signed out, it asks for a conversation id and the email it belongs to.

An abstract rendering of the Haldane queue

What things cost

Three price tiers for lenses, with the coatings and thicknesses each one includes stated rather than sold at the counter.

Standard

From £68 a pair

Everyday prescriptions where thickness is not the problem.

  • Hard-coated lenses
  • Anti-reflection as standard, not as an upsell
  • Cut and fitted on the bench upstairs
  • Two-year scratch warranty

Thin

From £145 a pair

Stronger prescriptions, or anybody tired of an edge that shows.

  • High-index material chosen to the power, not to the price
  • Premium anti-reflection with a water-shedding top layer
  • Edge polished on rimless and drilled mounts
  • Two-year scratch warranty

Varifocal

From £260 a pair

Anyone who has started holding a menu at arm's length.

  • Measured on your own chosen frame, seated and standing
  • A month to get used to them, or they are remade
  • Corridor length matched to the frame depth
  • Two-year scratch warranty

What is real here, and what is not

Haldane Optical is a business invented for this page. Read this before you believe anything else on it.

Genuinely running

  • The assistant in the thread is a live Busymate AI assistant, grounded in this site's own published pages.
  • The workshop list, the lens tiers and the bench's open threads come from this demo's own MCP server — real tool calls, not pasted text.
  • The page registers its own actions over WebMCP, so an agent can highlight a service or open the enquiry form.
  • Signing in as the demo customer is a real identity hand-off: the assistant receives a name and an email address it never asked for.

Seeded, not connected

  • There is no Apple Messages for Business account behind this page. Nothing here is registered with Apple, no thread exists in anybody's Messages app, and no Apple service is contacted at any point.
  • Haldane Optical is an invented practice. The address, the telephone number, the email, the opticians, the prices and the threads are all fictional — nothing here dials or reaches anybody.
  • Conversations started here live in memory until this demo restarts. No repair is booked and nobody on a bench is notified.

The Apple Messages for Business connection is on the roadmap, not in production — this page shows the assistant half of it working against a seeded bench so you can judge the experience before a registration exists.

Put this on your own site

The same bench, in your customers' own Messages app

The same assistant, the same page actions, the same identified sign-in — on your Apple Messages for Business setup instead of this one.

  1. Point the assistant at your site so your own services, prices and turnarounds become the answers it gives, as published content rather than a re-typed copy.
  2. Expose the bench as a small MCP server: what you take on, a lookup by reference and email, and a read that only answers for the signed-in person.
  3. Give the enquiry tool an action card, so a job opens as one structured record instead of a message somebody has to re-read and re-type.
  4. Wire the identity hand-off, because a thread that never resets is only worth having if the assistant knows who has been talking in it.
  5. Register the business last. Verification is a process with a queue; everything above can be right and proven before you join it.

How to integrate Apple Messages for Business

Frequently asked

The assistant answers from these same words — ask it any of them and compare.

Will you put lenses in a frame I already own?

Usually, yes — it is a good deal of what the bench does. The frame is tested first with a scrap edge, because a dry acetate or a fatigued rimless mount can split during cutting, and you would rather hear that before the lenses are paid for than during.

Can an old frame actually be repaired?

More often than people expect. Metal hinges solder, rimless mounts re-thread, and a missing arm can be machined to match. What cannot be saved is a frame that has gone brittle all the way through — the bench will say so rather than take the money and try.

How long does a pair of varifocals take?

Seven to ten working days for anything hand-edged, five for a standard job. The measurement happens on the frame you have chosen, seated and standing, which is the step most of the trade skips and the reason most varifocal complaints exist.

Do I have to come in to ask something?

No. Most questions — a price, whether a repair is possible, where a pair has got to — are answered in the thread, and a photograph of a break saves a trip. Anything that needs the frame on your face, like a refit, is ten minutes at the bench with no appointment.
